Hookset For Tube Jigs

Featured Replies

After losing a smallie that would have beaten by PB by at least a pound today, I feel like I should ask this question. How do you guys set the hook when you're using a tube on a jighead? I've tried a couple different types of sets, but I can't find one that seems more consistent.

Half way between a shakey head hookset and a drop shot hooket. Smallies have very hard mouths and don't get hooked as easily as largemouth. Sharp hooks and execute well!

Hmm. Never had any particular trouble with hooksets on tube baits. A quick, solid overhead pull does the job usually. A second hookset after reeling down following the first one sometimes helps. But for smallies, even more so than largemouth, not keeping a tight line is your worst enemy.

I was going to write a response but this hits it on the head. I would add maybe a better description of the gear you are using and if you missed the fish on the hook set or lost it during the fight.

With tube hooks I go over my head...t-rigged I go lower, reel about even with my chin.

Thanks for the help everybody. I lost this one during the fight, so I probably got some slack in the line somehow. I was using a st croix avid M/F spinning rod with 20lb power pro braid and a 10lb yozuri hybrid leader. In hindsight I probably should have given it a second set because he was relatively far away.
