Rod Making?

Featured Replies

What is better about making your own rod? Does it save you money? Or is it more you can have it how you want it? Just curious about this cause it would sure be fun to make my own. Also is it difficult and what do you have to do?

Thanks

Depending on what your time is worth to you, making your own can save some, but mostly it is "I get the rod I want" (not what the factory thinks I want)...
Also is it difficult and what do you have to do?
There is a learning curve...Start by reading the sticky above...."Newbies with rod building questions".

Watch out though it is addicting...  :o

The satisfaction of completing your own rod is great, your way-everything hand picked-awsome.

Learning curves are the fun parts, Maybe thats what keeps you on wanting to make your next one ;D

I for one am glad I took the advice and time to practice casting before I wrapped the guides, I did find a much better performance in casting by doing this.

I have a lathe set up for turning handles but have not done it yet. My first few rods I purchased individual handles, still a little custom :o

hey fishing buds

ive been building rods for about 6 years now and let me tell you its not about saving money building a quality rod , a cutom rod, a rod for a specific pupose, its about you,and what you want endless possibilities,

its addicting and i keep building them and wont stop .as you buld you have more confidence and they get better and better, then you start buying tools and lathes and other equipment ...its not cheap

but it sure beats the production rods you see in the stores .

one thing i can tell you learn about the spine of a rod go into a store that sells rods and check the spine on those rods you will be amazed at how many rods are not built correctly on their spine... you can build a far superior rod yourself

There's really nothing more I can to add to what others have said, but that it is very satisfying to make something with your own hands and then catch a fish with it.  A custom rod, built properly, will easily outperform most store bought rods.

You can get started very cheaply.  I built my first wrapper from scrap lumber and still use it.  Bought a turning motor off ebay for $9 - still use it.

I built my first two rods at this cost, keep in mind I already purchased over a two month period  my apoxy, tools and thread. (Dec and Jan)

I believe it can be cheaper if you have purchased high dollar rods in the past, you should beable to make a better one thats cheaper. But if your like me and the most you spent on a rod is around 40 bucks in the past, then you may see you spending more on a rod build now.

well anyway I figured you could use some detail purchase info here, good luck

Tony

you can build a very nice rod for under 100$. you will have some upfront costs with epoxy, thread and finish - but these will last for many rods to come.
