Hello,

Does anyone use a weight when fishing a fluke type bait?  I would like to fish it a few feet deep.

Yea Iuse some split shot about 8 inches in front of the bait

I use the Slugo nail-style weights. they seem to really help the bait not jump out of the water nose first. I can work it sowly at 3-4 ft or speed up, and it will stay just under the surface. Does not seem to hurt the action at all.

I sometimes use the hooks with the lead molded to the hook up near the line tie.

I picked up some of these bug eye hooks for doing exactly the same thing.

Haven't had a chance to try them out yet though.

At times I've put rubber core sinkers (with rubber removed) on the hook shank and they still have good, erratic action as long as you don't overpower the lure with the sinker.

I put a finishing nail in the middle of the body.  Keeps the horizontal posture but gets it down a little quicker.  I just bought some storm suspend strips to wrap the hook because even though the nail weight works well in the sluggo, the fluke has that deep cavity and can be a pain to nail.  I tried the weighted hooks but they put too much weight at the head and the bait was dropping nose first.  I also tried those bug eyed weighted hooks, but didn't like them either.

Couple weeks ago I had a bass come clean out of the water after a fluke that busted the surface nose first.  There's something to be said for presenting it this way.
