Missouri River Smallmouths

Featured Replies

Just wondering if theres anyone who fishes the missouri river impoundments in south dakota? Primarily upper third of francis case and lower third of sharpe?? Walleye is king there and not many people target smallies. Ive had many many 50-100 fish days with fish averaging 2-3 lbs and a real shot at several five plus every outing....from the area and i miss it bad!

I live on the Missouri River in North Dakota and spend a lot of time on Lake Sakakawea and Lake Oahe. Both are apparently very good smallmouth fisheries. I have never been able to find these fish hide on these large bodies of water. Where did you start looking for smallies on the Missouri River Reservoirs? I have been able to find smallies on Lake Sakakawea's neighboring impoundment, Lake Audubon, but really struggle with Sak and Oahe. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I fished Lake Sharpe once and yes we were targeting walleyes but spent an afternoon/evening fishing smallies.  I think it was good and we caught a decent amount.  My impression (based on one day) was that the average size was like you said 2-3 pounds.  Nothing wrong with that...  but I've actually had better luck and bigger fish in the Glacial Lakes area (Webster, SD) for smallies.  I would think a closer drive for you from Omaha.  Average size there seemed bigger and have caught a few 20 inchers.  If you've ever seen the Lindner's shows, they do 1-2 episodes every year there for a reason.
