question about reel seat and rod blank. HELP!!

Featured Replies

Ok, now that I researched alot of info on rod building, I still have one more question. The rod blank is smaller than the reel seat, so you put arbors in between it. but than How do you have the blank exposed?

I'm really pulling my hair on this one and it's the only thing keeping me from building my first rod.

Exposed blank reel seats come in different size inside diameters measured in millimeters.

You will want to measure the diameter of the rod blank where the reel seat will go and get the closest size reel seat you can find. If you are unsure of the size of the rod blank and which reel seat will fit, call up Mudhole or wherever you will be ordering your components from and they should be able to help you out.

When you are fitting the seat you may need to file or sand the inside to get it to fit just right. If its just a hair to loose put a couple pieces of masking tape around the blank until it fits properly.

If you know the general location you are looking to put the reel seat when you order, then you can have the seat fitted to the blank prior to shipping. This is the best way I have found to ensure that the proper seat is delivered. You can always call the supplier you purchased the blank from and have them do that now also. Then they can send you the proper seat.

I would rather ream a seat to proper fit than to use ANY type of arbor when using a exposed blank seat. More work involved, but makes a better looking union where the blank is exposed.

Handmade or homemade. The difference is in the details.
