i would recommend  a used mathews solo cam bow. i  have had probably 20 new bows over the last 10 years and am back to shooting a mathews MQ1 that was made in 2002, nothing else shoots as good for me and is as easy to maintain, the older mathews bows are just plain and simple deer killing machines.

I got the new PSE Stinger X ready for the field package last year and I have nothing negative to say about it.

I can't remember exactly what it costs but it was a decent price.

Honestly, check out your local pawn shop.  Not the yuppy one on main street that only sells T.V.s and old video games.  Go to a redneck dirty pawn shop.  They always have bows, usually in good condition, with everything included (from some guy who spent way too much and his wife made him sell it).  If you go the pawn shop route, you can take a bunch of junk for trade to bring the price down.

personally i would only get a single cam bow, though some people prefer 2 cam bows, but the fact really cant be argued that single cam bows are easier to tune and maintain, even if your cam goes out of sync on a one cam bow it will still shoot straight, it may loose a few FPS but you might not even notice the little speed loss. if the string or cables stretch on a 2 cam bow even a little your arrow will porpoise and you will have major accuracy and penetration problems. if you are looking for a bow you should check out archerytalk.com. its my second home lol. there are people selling bows in the classified and people post new ones every day, i have bought and sold MANY bows on there (i think i got like 90+ feedbacks on there) and its a really good group of people.

I have a Bow Tech, Diamond, Black Ice. I really like it. It is capable of more than I am, honestly. It wasn't too terribly expensive.

All the new PSE bows are amazing and extremely competitive with prices.

If you are a mathews nut (Some call it a sickness, I personally think it's a mental thing) look at Mission Bows. It is owned by Mathews to compete with PSE, Bowtech, Redhead, etc. I demoed the Mission Ballistic for a year for a local store. Bow was freaking amazing. Fast as hell (345 fps), very short, and could be purchased bare bow for $400.

Owning a Mathews IS addictive. I don't sell my old ones. I currently have (competiton bows) a Conquest, Conquest II, Conquest 4,and Apex 8. Hunting bows: Switchback, Switchback XT, Drenaline, DXT, HeliM, Z7, Monster, Chill, and No Cam HTR...

My favorite one out of all of the hunting models I have is the DXT. Great treestand and groundblind bow.

Here in WV, crossbows have just been legalized this year. I recently purchased a Ten Point Archery model and I'm looking forward to using it this season.

I have a disabled buddy that hunts with a crossbow. That thing is basically a quiet rifle. Unbelievable how fast and accurate they are.

I feel very comfortable out to 45 yards with it so far.. I'm just glad that we now have the option to hunt with a vertical or crossbow now. Our DNR and state has always been behind the times when it comes to everything.

I feel you on that being from VA as well. Last year was the first year that allows you to use both on you archery license. I use a crossbow but looking to going into compound next year.
