i want to make a split grip rod and was wandering if you could make a full grip into a split grip because i feel it helps balance the rod more

Yes, it can be done, but the challenge is to remove the epoxy.  Not sure why you would think it would balance a rod, unless the rod is butt heavy.  ;D  Anyway, the weight reduction is probably measureable but not much.

removing weight from behind the reel seat, no matter how little, negatively affects balance.

but yes, you can split the grip.  There was a tutorial posted a while back by "justtrying" you might find it with a search.
