I was more curious about the line of bass rods they have.

They make a great musky Rod im sure there bass rods are nice also.

The bass dr is the only guy i have ever seen use them.

I am also curious about all star rods. I am in the hunt for light and high sensitivity at a decent price. I wont just buy a bull dawg without trying to get someones opinion on it

why don't you look into a custom , there are some nice blanks out there that you can make a killer rod without breaking the bank , think about it ....

Looking at the Bull Dog site it is a custom rod builder that offers a standard line of rods similar to ALX rods.

It doesn't appear that Bull Dog is a rod blank mfr, the assembly rods to the users requirements, same as site sponsor DVT.

it's Bulldawg as in Reaction Strike , not Bulldog as in an ugly dog ...

why don't you look into a custom , there are some nice blanks out there that you can make a killer rod without breaking the bank , think about it ....[/quote

I just had a build done on a st croix led tourn blank from a guy i found in my area and it is lack luster to say the least. I didnt want to be rude to the guy by saying hey this sucks, just found out the hard way that i can't use him again. I know have to figure out how to strip this thing down and build it myself. He did it for 125 bucks though so at worst i got a good blank.

He did it for 125 bucks though so at worst i got a good blank.

I don't know about the Bull Dawg rods but the Bull Dog rods out of VA have done some really good builds for the guys in the area.

Give sponsor DVT a call and get a quote. Most custom rod builders don't like to remove reel seats and handles, redoing guide sets isn't a problem.

I bet....and that is one of the problems. Reel seat is not great and the guide placement is poor. I think i am going to dismantle it myself and use it as my 1st build. I am meticulous so this could be a good hobby for me. I dont have alot of time bc i have an 8mth old daughter and i fish when i am not doing the family thing, but its a long winter. Lol

A good rod builder should give you a free 30 to 90 day trail period and correct any mistakes or make a new rod. Not familiar with DVT's policy, he gets a lot of support on this site?

when considering a custom rod builder , ask for photos of previous rods made by him/her , check the internet on their website for a gallery of built rods , ask about warranty guidelines , etc..

 

 you always have to do some research as you want this rod to be exactly as you envision , take the time to test fit different reel seats for asthetics , comfort , and look you want . research what guide material that would best suit your needs , what size guides (micro guides , tangle free guides , etc..) cost of guides , color guide frames (black , chrome , gunsmoke , etc..) what kind of handle you would like (eva, cork ,syncork, hypalon , carbon fiber tube , etc..) length of handle (measured from the back of reel seat to butt ), style of hook keeper ( open ended, closed loop , foldable , etc..) all these things need thought to how you want your rod , the potential builder should have knowledge of these things and help you deciding what works for you , cause when it's all said and done this rod should be a pleasure to fish and perform how you want it to . and by the way , get it right and you will never buy an off the shelf rod again ..

Will do thanks. When i took it out the 1st time the top 4 guides were out of position. I took it back and explained that the line management in the last 4 guides was off and to adjust them. I got it back to find that not much was done and it looked like it was a guess as to where they were placed. Instead of repeating that process I would use it as a way to get me building. I am going to start that this fall

don't be dissuaded , custom rods built to your liking are such a pleasure to fish , I'm currently been researching my next rod , an 8 ft. MH fast action blank , made by Phenix rods , and by the way , Phenix is such a pleasure to deal with , talked to them about 35 minutes and they answered all my questions and even weighed blanks for me .

Definitely keep the blank , a good builder can strip that blank and redo it !!

What if it was a rookie builder with big aspirations????
