Question About Line Spooling

Featured Replies

hey yall i was wondering when i put new line on do you guys fill up your spool with mostly cheap line then put the nice line on after? so you dont waste alll your good line on like 1 or 2 reels?

I do it often. Put a cheap mono as backing, and then attach a good braid or fluoro. For copoly and mono, I just spool it straight on. This is because you will only ever need under 70 yards for bass fishing.

I always fill up with the best then during the season replace the top 30 yards or so.  I f you are out on the lake and something catastrophic happens and you lose that top 30 yards, you'll have good line on your reel.  It also allows you to transfer line from reel to reel in a pinch.

Not sure why I got a double post......sorry.

yes, i do for expensive lines like flouro and braid.  mono or copoly just get spooled straight.

no more than about 75 yards of the good line for me...

Yup. Every reel gets backing even ones with copoly. I just go to Walmart and pick up a 700 yard spool of Zebco line and use it as backing (it's like $2.25 for a 700 yard spool)

Backing for everything. My 20 lb copoly was put on a full spool. Recently took it off and about 2/3s of it was kinked and ruined from dig in and memory.

+1

For braid I "back" the spool until it at least has one layer of mono or fluro (normally whatever I have on almost spent spools laying around).  Then fill the rest with braid.

For fluro I wind the whole spool just in case I am blessed with a condor's nest and I have to dig my way out of it.
