$99 Rod Dobyns Fury, 13 Omen, Or Abu Garcia Veritas 2.0

Recommended Posts

Looking to buy a new rod.

I want a 7ft MH, which I will use as my workhorse rod for all casting applications. (jigs/ t-rigs etc)

I hear a lot of good things about the *** black, and one guy recommends the Abu Garcia Veritas (what are the advantages of the micro guides? should I stick with regular guides?)

Anyone have any recommendations between these two? The 100 dollar price point is important, i don't have the luxury to buy anything more expensive (200 and up), I feel like it will be wasting away in my room since I cant get out as much as Id like too. Thanks! (edit adding the dobyns fury)

Id pick the *** out of the three. I cant speak on the dobyns because ive never even held one, but i had a mh casting in the *** and veritas lines. Both are sensitive but the *** was just a little better. Also the abu felt more like a heavy action than its mh label. If you do decide on the veritas, id definitely reccomend holding it if possible so you can get a feel for it. A medium power veritas will fish more like a mh and load up and cast with a bigger variety of baits

X2 on the veritas fishing like a heavy but I loved it. Mine was not the new version but the original was great. I used it for football jigs. It was relitivly light for being a 7'6" rod. Handled awesome but only lasted a year before a couple of the ceramic inserts for the guides fell out. Still a heck of a rod for what I paid (50 bucks). I've held a few omens and have heard great things but I just can't get used to such a short handle. Nothing against the rod, I'm sure its awesome I just prefer a longer handle.

Wait for the new version 2 *** coming out , long full cork grip with an even better rod blank .

Unless fishing in tighter quarters - I would opt for the new *** 7'3" MH as being ideal .

I love my ***, it's a great rod and a solid choice. Based on reviews, however, I'd say you can't go wrong with any of those choices.

I just posted some rod info here:

http://www.bassresource.com/bass-fishing-forums/topic/161973-great-stuff-on-sale/#entry1832772

Scroll down to about the tenth post. Just a little info on a few rods I've gone through in the past four months and what I wound up going with.

I have/had all 3 of the rods you list.

IF the reel seat of the current *** works for you then it's a great stick.  I have the 7'1" MH.  For me I managed to have the side of my middle finger nail rub/cut into the side of my ring finger to the point of bleeding by the end of the day.  BIG hands + tiny reel seat = UGH...  The next gen model should hopefully solve that issue.

The Veritas is a very stout stick and pretty light.  I like it for plastics and jigs, as it has a fairly fast taper to it.  I have the 705.

The Fury.  It's a bit heavier than the other 2 and has a slower taper, but still plenty of power.  It's a very versatile rod as I have fished big spinner/chatterbaits as well as Carolina Rigs and Keitechs with the 735 model.

Thanks for the responses guys. Especially the tips on Abu Garcia's rod labels, I remember reading this on a different site.

I was looking up those ***, i do like the longer handles as well. I am leaning towards this.

Of those three I would also like the flexibility to even cast treble lures (drag dialed down seems to be the most effective way to accomplish this) , seems like that rules the Veritas out.

You all gave me some more insight I can factor in to my decision!! THanks and tight lines

I will also state that having an understanding that the Veritas 1.0 is stiffer across all flexes than is the Veritas 2.0 version . Still a number of people state that the Veritas 2.0 is still a little stiffer still than competitors offerings in the same flexes , so better to error on the side of say a MH instead of a H flex , a M flex instead of a MH flex , etc.

The 2.0 isn't as stiff as the original, but it is still a bit more than my other mediums. My gen 1 *** was spot on with its power rating. I only have the 705cb in the fury so it's not a fair comparison since it's a crankbait rod. My *** will be here on Friday.

What are the weights of the baits you'll be using the most? As you've learned mh isn't exactly mh in certain cases.

Trebles...  Dobyns

A 734/704 is an amazingly versatile rod.

Yup, my 704dx and 733 champ can cover just about everything.

I'm all in on the *** rod. I love the 3 I have and two are MH. I also have a Veritas 2.0 and it's one full weight stiffer than the tag. I use a Dobyns Savvy for drop shot but have no experience with the Fury.

I ended up going with the St. Croix Rage 6'8'' MHF. On sale for $89 from 150, couldn't resist. Let's see how it goes, this is my first major rod purchase. Rod Rooster made me do it!!!

Now to play the waiting game/ praying it doesn't get damaged in shipment.

I purchased a yamaha MX10 (battery powered guitar amp) and first one arrived with the protective foam IN PIECES and the input jack knocked off it's seat. Guitar center hooked it up with another one, but still, the shipping industry scares me o.O
