Revo Mgx

Featured Replies

I Received a Revo MGX for fathers day. A few months prior I bought a Revo SX. I have 30 lb braid on the MGX and 12 lb copolymer on my sx and use it for cranking. I can throw weightless baits on my MGX and sometimes if I use small cranks like a DT4, It is EXTREMELY hard to hone in my SX to cast it without birdsnesting.

Besides the fact that one reel is better than another, what makes it that way? Is it the centrifigal brakes vs the magnetic brakes? Is it the line, rod, reel combo? Would I have had seen an improvement in casting if I would have bought the Revo STX?

Thanks,

Steve

If you are throwing the same light lures on your SX as your MGX realize that the MGX spool is significantly lighter, 10 grams vs about 15 grams. Centrifugal brakes are more forgiving and also the line may play a role.

an important factor here is what rods the reels are mounted on.

My Gen 3 Revo STX went through a phase were it was constantly backlashing, all I did was clean it and that seemed to work. It may have been my extremely dirty side plate not allowing the magnetic brakes to do their job.

MH fast 7' shimano sellus rod (worm and jig) with revo MGX and 30 lb power pro

MM moderate 7'4" mojo bass crankster with revo SX reel, 12 lb pline

The break system in the MGX is miles ahead of the SX. I could never control the SX I had and got rid of it. The MGX is designed for fishing lighter stuff but is a very good all purpose reel.

Do you happen to know if these issues were solved with the STX?

I was able to cast weightless flukes, pit bosses and trick worms with my Gen 3 STX on a Champion 703.
