Best Lures For Trolling Pike

Featured Replies

What are some of the best lures to troll for pike? We have a lake near us that has a population of pike that I want to try trolling for. Any info. Is appreciated as I have never done this before. Thanks!

Spinner baits, spoons & plugs. Jointed rapalas, husky jerks & most jerkbaits/crankbaits will work. Pike like to follow a lure for a while before striking so a change in direction & a change in speed helps trigger them. You can even troll topwaters baits for them.

Big jerkbaits/minnow baits.

I like the Rapala Super Shad rap in yellow perch pattern. Basically any big shallow running lure with lots of action, flash, vibration, etc.

Depends on the general size of the pike in your lake. Pike up to about 12 pounds can be successfully taken on spinnerbaits or bass-type plugs and standard bass gear. Understanding of course that you are using at least a 12" steel leader (or titanium). And that, with spinnerbaits, you're better off with titanium (flex) frames, vs. steel. Pike will demolish steel framed spinnerbaits.

If the pike found can be up to 20+ lbs. in your lake, then by all means try some of the larger plugs (such as the 8" Believer) and big in-line bucktail spinners, like the Wendel's Musky Harrassers. I would also go with a longer 18" steel leader (or titanium), as these larger pike can engulf a big lure and a lot of line. Anything shorter will almost guarantee a lost plug or spinner.

I see on tv fishing shows they take a double blade inline and stop the boat and using a long rod and make a big figure eight with the lure. The pike strike it.

Over stocked bait & tackle has pike/muskie lures
