Big 3.5" Shallow Square-Bill. Another Proto ;-)

Featured Replies

This bait is bigger than a BDS 3......about 3 1/2" long.

Semi-round body with a square/coffin bill.

I've tried several different lip angle and line-tie configurations for this body. Lots of different actions, but I think I'm still searching for "the one."

Here's some test videos:

Tight action:

Wide action:

That's quite a bit of tail kick on the wide wobble! Both actions look good String.

Both actions look very good, although I prefer the wider wobble. I can't wait to see your lures painted.

I've spent more time on this proto than any of the others to date - - it's really been a good learning experience.

I've experimented a lot on the line-tie / lip angle relationship with this one.

3 different line-tie positions

4 different lip angles

3 different lip sizes

I've tested every combination of the above (as far as tub testing goes... ;D )

I'm learning that shallow cranks are very complex creatures.  Small changes make very big differences, and there are so many different combinations!!

It's fun though.....I love it.   ;)

It does sound fun. I think I'll stick to just reading about and admiring custom cranks though  ;) sounds like it's borderline obsessive.

I like the second video with the wider wobble on a big shallow crank.  Secondary benefit of testing and filming in the tub:  you gotta clean it a little before you shoot, so you make a couple of points with the significant other.  It's a Twofer!

How true, Bob.  The girl loses so much hair every time she takes a shower I'm surprised she isn't bald by now.   ;)   Doesn't take her long to figure out when I've been playing mad scientist in her tub.

I like the action in the 2nd video.    If you want to try something really different, give that bait a big block head.   Taper the last 2/3 of the bait and see what that action is like, it's good.   I have a bait that is almost exact to yours but I don't taper the head.

Glad you are having fun with this, keep up the good work.

Jon, I like the tighter wiggle on most baits so my vote goes for the first video. As you are finding, even the slightest change can make some drastic changes in action but the fun in building, at least for me, comes from the experimentation.

I like em both! Great job jam! I may have to PM you for the recipe on that paint job though. LOL

Both look cool, but it seemed to me the 2'nd. one the tail kicked out wider, wide action I guess, which was real cool. Good job. Its been kinda fun watching your work progress. ;)

I like the wider action because there are lots of crankbaits, especially ones with flat sides, with tight action.  I fish tight action shallow baits more than wide but you want options in the boat.

The vote seems to be split on preference for the action.

Personally - I like a tight action 90% of the time, on pretty much any style of crank.

It seems like there's times when a wide wobbling crank will get SLAMMED, though - especially in the summer.....like Bob said, it's nice to have the option in the boat.

I think I'll continue to do the prototypes this way.....both options, a wide version and a tight version.

what color u thinking of painting it? ;)

I don't plan on painting these protos......I may not be done hacking and cutting and sanding and gluing on them for awhile.   :)

Jon, I heard somebody was giving pretty good odds that it had some purple mixed in ;D

Well......purple is the nectar of the paint gods. ;)

I'm really starting to like pink, too.

Perhaps I'll combine both into a new scheme called "JEM."

Hmm.. Sounds like synergy to me! ;D ;)
