Flipping/pitching Rod

Featured Replies

New here, thanks for taking the time to read this, and possibly answer.  95% of my fishing has been with spinning equipment, but where I'm headed (Florida) and some of the fishing I plan will require casting equipment.  I have a 7' St. Croix Tidemaster Med. Hvy Power, Fast action 10 - 20 lb line, 1/2 - 1 1/2 oz inshore saltwater rod, wondering if this might serve as a general pitching/flipping rod.  Would pair it with a Pflueger Supreme or BPS PQ, in 6:4 or 7: 1.  What do you guys with way more knowledge of this type fishing think of this?  Thanks

The rod would probably handle the lighter pitching.  I'm guessing you are going to spool up with braid?  Being a spinning set up anything over #30 is going to be tough to fish on spinning gear.  I would PM Sirsnooksalot and ask him.  He fishes a lot of spinning gear down in FL and could be more helpful on getting you set up on a spinning set up.  But I would say yes and put either 20 or 30lb braid on and just work the fish out.

Sounds like a good Flippin/Pitchin/Punchin' setup.  I would go for the 7:1 as you'll need to take up line fast.  I would also spool it up with 50lb braid.

Catch some hawgs..:)

Thanks guys, Puggz thanks and yes that was my thought on the 7:1, and yes planned on using braid but wasn't sure of lb. test.   GulfCaptain, baitcasting.  Do you guys have an opinion between hose two reels, same price range?  All of my spinning equipment is Pflueger which is why I'm considering that reel, but have heard good stuff about the PQ.

I'd look at the specs, I'm guessing it's going to be a 40 size reel.  I'd look at drag as well as IPT and go from there.  But if you're happy with what you already fish, I'd stay with Pfueger.

That rod should work well for what you're looking for. It's pretty much the same as a H power bass rod. As far as reels go, I've had good luck with all the bps reels I've bought and have heard great things about them. Pfluger makes some quality stuff too, but I've never used one of their bait casters to say for sure. Either way you go, get the fastest retrieve you can get for the flippin/pitchin efficiency.

he's asking about a baitcaster not a spinning reel

I totally misread that. That case find something with a 29-32 IPT and spool up with some 40-50lb braid and have at it.  Either would work, I haven't fished the PQ, but do fish the Carbonlites.

Thanks WIGuide. Going to use this rod and most likely the Pflueger, I've had very good experience with their mid-priced range equipment, so if it ain't broke..............

The outfit sounds like it will serve you just fine. What Lake in FL do you plan to fish?  If you decide to punch in really thick stuff, for example hydrilla or hyacinth you may be under powered.

When you get addicted to flippin go get a Falcon Cara Amistad 7'3'' Heavy action with the perfect tip for rippin lips.  Happy hunting brother.
