Spooltek Lures?

Featured Replies

I saw these at BPS last weekend. They had them in the salt water area, but they make a 4" and 6" that should work for bass. It is a swimbait with a hard plastic head and soft plastic replaceable tails. It has a single hook that is positioned upright into the top of the bait. The single hook is on a leader of line, so when the fish bites the leader comes out so the fish cannot use the weight of the lure to free himself. After you unhook the fish, there is a small thumbwheel in the head of the lure to reel the leader back into fishing position. It looks a little bit like a gimmick, but seemed interesting. They were about $15 so I passed. Anyone try them and how did it work?

If you did not grasp my description look them up "Spooltek Lures"

What do you think?

If you wish to try the lure please do so and let us know how it performs.

I have not tried the lure and with winter right around the corner will not buy it this year.

I would think it would attract bass so  give it a try.

I read about these but haven't seen them in person.  The idea sounds nice but more moving parts to a lure just seems like more possible places the lure can wear out/fail over time.

no, but saw an online ad for them yesterday.  my question in my head was about the hookset?  if the leader comes loose from the bait how can you ensure a solid hookset?

They work...

But I really don't see the need nor do you get that solid of a hook set. The tail action is subpar to gambler big ez or a kietch style bodies.

You'll have to close an extra "12 of wire on a hook set. The hooks ride exposed out of the back half of the bait , it's hardly weed less.

The idea is pretty cool. I'll give it credit for creativity. But I found it hardly practical

I actually picked one of these up this spring and love it for pike.  It is the 7 inch one i believe so it is bigger than what I normally use for bass.  I bought it after losing a couple other larger swim-baits on one of the lakes I fish.  I would think it would work similar to a line-through bait in the way it keeps the bait away from the hook.  I am going to pick up some smaller ones if they are making then in 4s

These baits are getting really popular here in South florida. People use then for snook and bass. I have no experience with them though.

Exactly

Exactly

With pike the hookup ratio has been great for me.  It has enough resistance that the hook does not pull away immediately.  It is a bare hook without any kind of guard so  it sets with little pressure.
