Mullet Run Surf Fishing

Featured Replies

The mullet run has begun! After seeing a video on youtube of people fishing topwater here in florida and catching tons of bluefish, jack, etc i think its time to get out their myself! Anyways i've never done surf fishing but i think i'm gonna take the approach they were which was throwing arftificials with a short 6' 6" rod. It just so happens that i have a 6' 6" saltwater rod and reel spinning combo equipped with 15lb mono that will hopefully get the job done. However i have no saltwater lures but i dont really think the fish care whether its a bass lure or not :P

My main concern is that i may not be able to cast very far due to the weight of my lures... So i would like to know whether my setup will suffice and what lures you would reccomend. I am hoping to catch my first non-pinfish saltwater fish.

20 or 30 lb braid/mono leader  would probably get more distance for you. Some of the lures you might try are heavy enough to go the distance you need.Spoons,Rebel wind cheaters,or bucktail jigs even with an inline sinker ahead of them.

I have yet to surf Fla,but up here often times the fish are no more than a short cast in the suds, particularly at high tide. Often times I will cast almost parallel to the shore line.

Other times you have to get a  bait past the first bar to do good.

Landing /releasing fish in the suds is a lot different than in a boat.Plan ahead what to do with your rod/reel while dealing with a fish. Laying them in the sand  is not an option.

Kinda hard to advise if your rod and reel will be sufficient without more details on their specs.

Gulp Shrimp 3" (Penny) I'm just not sure if it'll be heavy enough.

Those lures are not at all likely to hold up to bluefish or jack crevalle. I recommend you pick up a few saltwater lures that are designed to take the abuse. You're definitely correct that you'd get bites but the hardware won't hold up

The reel seems ok. The rod sounds short for what you're trying to do and it probably wouldn't load too well casting the lures in your pic.
