Freshwater Guy Going After Striper...help.

Featured Replies

Going striper hunting tomorrow out of Norfolk, not really sure where I'm going, heading out with an older angler that's become a good friend. I'm thinking of using different rat-l-traps and some gulp jerk shad. Any advice would be great, definitely a rookie when it comes to fishing saltwater and stripers!

Your mentioned lures should work. I have been reading about jigging spoons such as the Stingsilver doing well. Have fun

Thanks, hopefully they do!

Been using Acme Kastmaster spoons on the schools that have been roaming around south of the bay bridge with great success though most are smaller then the 20 inches required to keep one in MD. Caught a healthy 30 incher on Saturday after 20-30 mins of trolling for the first time this fall so there is definitely some good fish around. I have always been a fan of using a bucktail as well. Good luck and most importantly have fun and post some pictures.

A white bucktail with a white curly-tail grub works pretty well, too.  Cheap and easy to fish.  Have clobbered them on Bass Assassins at times....

I have gone surf casting at Newburyport several times a year, for several years. I cannot for the life of me figure these d**n fish out. Have yet to catch one. I usually end up setting up the rod and giving up after a few hours and enjoying a cold drink and the scenery.

Went out and caught two small stripers, still had a blast tho! Was using a white bucktail jig with a grub and I kept getting hits but no solid hook ups. At one point there were scales on the hook after the bump. Decided that they weren't committing, so I changed to a yellow grub and I caught my first striper after my first cast. We caught five in total largest being 18" I believe.

Sounds like a good time even those little guys can put up a great fight with the right gear. I am hoping to get out on the boat sometime this weekend and do a mix of trolling and casting into the schools if they are around

Glad to hear you got to fight a couple and that you had a good time!  I've been going on a spring flyfishing trip for stripers on Cape Cod for 21 consecutive years.  They are fun fish!
