Indian/ Banana River Lagoon?

Featured Replies

I am headed to cape Canaveral FL for the holidays and would like to fish in the Indian or Banana river, probably with a guide and preferably with fly rod, but I could mix in some spinning if i need to. What is the fishing like around this time of year? Any migratory fish around? Good area for a beginner inshore trip? I tried earlier this year on a spinning rod but found it hard to do anything without a boat, so I want to try with a charter/ guide- any suggestions?

Never fished up there, but further south in the Indian River I have success throwing mirrolures around sandy openings in the grass flats.

Lol i live like 2 miles from the indian river soooooo......

Your really gonna want to have a boat or kayak to get out there in the flats, unless your ok with catching pinfish (sailor's choice) all day. I don't know anything about fly fishing but i have heard it works ok for redfish. However if i could have one lure it would be a super spook jr (preferably bone). Work it along mangroves and you're likely to catch a snook. Fall is prime time for flounder inshore. They can be caught on Gulp Shrimp (preferably new penny) in the 3-4” range. You could also try dropping mangrove crabs near piers and catch yourself some sheepshead. If your unsure in any situation, live shrimp is a reliable bait for any type of fish.

Hope i helped!

Cape Canaveral is close to the mosquito lagoon (name is a lie btw) which is the redfish capital of the world! Definetly take a boat out there if you can (lots of guides there too) but if you're stuck on land try going to the Haulover canal which is definetly the best land spot around.
