Looking For A Rod

Featured Replies

Looking for a 7' ultra light or light in moderate or moderate fast action spinning rod, which I'm having difficulty locating at  the $100.00 or thereabouts price point.  Throwing very light jigs a distance, for panfish.

Phenix has a 6'10 in the Maxim line. It's a medium light rated fast, but the blank flexes pretty deep. It's definitely more of a moderate fast. It should cast and load the light stuff very well. I fondled this exact rod in a local store and the blank felt fantastic for a hundred dollar rod. Plus it has SIC guides.

I don't know this rod but the brand has a good reputation.

The sic guides are a plus..

Thanks guys!  I see that Tackle Direct which is nearby carries Phenix so I'll take a look.  Not an easy rod, meaning that length/Power and action combo, to locate.  For me anyway

St. Croix has a 6'9" in their Panfish Series.  Not quite seven feet, but an excellent rod for the money.  I love mine.

Bob, are you throwing 1/16 oz and possibly lighter with some distance?  I have a St. Croix Premier 7' Ultra light / fast, I'm wondering if the Panfish performs differently, if the action is perhaps more of a moderate fast.

I'd definitely describe the action as "fast."  I'll make it a point to throw some 1/16 and lighter stuff with it tomorrow and give you a report.

Thanks Bob.  Also, I now see Fenwick has the HMG 70UL/M for $99 which I'll take a look at. I'm a fan of both St. Croix and Fenwick

Mike,

I did a little non-scientific testing in the back yard today.  My St. Croix Panfish Series 6'9" ULF rod with a small Shimano Symetre reel spooled with 4 lb. Fireline and 4 lb. fluoro leader limits out, in my opinion, with 1/16th oz for any distance.  I cast a bare 1/16 jig head pretty easily, but dropping to even 1/20 (bare Shroomz jig) made getting any good distance difficult at best.  If that lighter jig was rigged with a small plastic grub, it would be OK.

The rod is rated by St. Croix for 1/32 to 1/4.  To me, that would indicate 1/16- 1/8 as the optimum, and my experience bears that out.  Results may be different using straight 4 lb. mono....

Tight lines,

Bob

Thanks very much Bob for taking the time to test and reply.  I'm going to try and get a look at the above mentioned Phenix as well as the Fenwick.  Going To Gettysburg Pa for a few days, Cabela's, Bass and Gander Mt. nearby so I should come away with something.  Thanks again, I appreciate it.

I hope I helped in some way.  I don't have any place close to home to handle decent rods, and finding long ultralight rods for a reasonable price that were anything but wet noodles has been a challenge.  The St.Croix was the first one I was really happy with.  I recently spent a little more money and bought a very nice Kistler KLX 6'3" ULF spinning rod that is a real beauty.  Third time out with that rod, I was launching in the early morning dark and broke the tip off with the bow line of my boat.  :-(

Be sure to post a follow-up and review on your choice!  Good luck!

Tight lines,

Bob

There's a 7ft ul moderate St Croix Avid in the classifieds for around $100. Tomsmustang or something close to that posted it. I have one and love it.

Edit...

Found it. $120
