Possibly fall is not the best time for painting works, but I need to do something with my hunter stove.

The old paint started to crack. What if I remove it and put a new coat of paint. So here are my questions: what paint type to use, number of required coats? What can I do to reduce the smell from the paint when the stove is heated?

Rust oleum puts out a paint for grills. You can get it in the spray paint section at Home Depot or Lowe's. I would just rough up the existing with sand paper of steel wool, and the do four light coats. Dry thoroughly and any chem smell should markedly dissipate after the first use.

My great grand dad did the old trapper trick. Soak black walnuts and coat the stove in that. That stove still looks like it did the day he got it. 

I made a woodstove. Lit it outside to cure and temper it. I let it heat up and cool down a few times. While it was hot I shot it with stove black heat paint. Used it since '87 @ my camp in vt. Still black.
