Fishing mostly rivers I am always checking my line and re-tying! I just use the rings as I figure that's one thing less to buy. I do favor the oval shaped rings for the reasons others have mentioned. 

I tried the snaps for a while one season, a few seasons back.   I found them to be more trouble than they were worth.  Just tie a knot.
