Lews Tournament Pro Tp1Hl Or Tournament Pro G Tpg1Hl

Featured Replies

I narrowed it down to these two reels as far as what im going to get. I know the Tournament pro G is kind of like the new model if the tournament pro but there about the same price. Is the newer one better. For an all around reel which one would you buy?

The older Tournament Pro is a proven item.  I haven't heard much of anything on the "G" version yet.  I think anyone who owns a pre-G Tournament Pro would assure you you'll be very happy with it.  I don't know about the new ones, but I wouldn't be afraid to try one...

Tight lines,

Love my TP. I'd recommend getting a new one on the cheap through eBay. What ratio are you looking for?

Im getting mine through amazon since i have a 50 dollar gift card, its only 10 dollars more on amazon than ebay. im looking at the 6.4.1. Im gonna pair it with a 7ft lighting shock rod till i have the money to buy something better. I also have a 7.6 Abu-Garcia Veritas Series Winch Model medium heavy that a friend gave me,  im thinking of putting a black max reel on that and using it as a crankbait rod.

I don't have the new one, but I do have the old one. I'd go ahead and buy the older version, if they changed much about the new one, you'd be hearing about it by now. It's a solid reel at a good price, go for it.

Thank you for helping me

You're welcome!

Use your new reel in good health, and catch lots of fish!

For what it's worth I had two shocks and didn't like either of them, at all. A 6'6" M and also MH. For around the same price range I went with a Fenwick Silverhawk and liked it much better.

Im not a expert by any means but i enjoy using the lighting shock, but then again maybe i dont know any better. the lighting shock is only 40 bucks from walmart, its by no means top of the line, its a bang for your buck rod. A lot of people that own higher end equipment say that its as good as some 80 dollar rods. I actually followed the recommendations of some of the users on here when i bought it.

either way, im looking for a new rod for the lews reel, so i'll take that into consideration. Maybe when im in PA ill drop by cabelas and try it.

thanks for helping me out, i pulled the trigger on the tournament pro older model.

Good choice man! Post up here when you are looking for a rod. I'll be here haha

I own both the (g) is less finicky casting different weights It's smaller and lighter I think it's worth the extra money.

Too late now lol the pro g doesn't have dual breaks though but who knows, maybe the future reels wont need them. i also like the way the older pro looks.

The older model is also more proven as far as durability.

They actually cost the same on amazon

The main difference is the old tp has dual magnetic/centrifugal brakes and the G gets the externally adjustable centrifugal brakes like the BB1 Pro has had for years. For that difference alone, I'd go with the G.

Yep, + the smaller LFS profile, 1/2oz lighter, added hook keeper.  Friend of mine has one and said its a phenomenal reel.
