After ice panfishing

Featured Replies

Guess you can consider this more of a how to fish for panfish in cold water because of the fact our ice is already gonna melt and we should be able to fish open water by next week. But I wanna know some tips on what to use and where to get em!

I was just out this past Sunday, fishing from the shoreline on a partially iced pond. Got 4 yellow perch and one crappie in about 1 1/2 hours from the shore. The only reason I quit was because I couldn't feel my fingers anymore! Air temp was 47 degrees, but the stiff wind did me in. Next time I'll dress more appropriately and bring along a couple of hand warmers!

Used my 7' SHSS, casting 1/16 oz. jigs. Started out with boot-tailed plastics, but after a few unproductive casts I switched to a straight tail, which is what they apparently wanted. Those Bobby Garland's Baby Shads are hard to beat this time of the year. Just cast out your jig. Let it settle to the bottom and start a S-L-O-W retrieve. You'll get bit. :)

Head to the back of dark bottom bays. The crappies show up first...........like the day or two after the ice melts, or after the pike leave. The pike move in and spawn before the ice is even off the lake. Then the come the bullheads a short time later, then the bluegills with the bass not far behind. Now early spring cold fronts and such can pump the breaks on these movements. The first few weeks, until things are fairly stable, they will all come and go, and come and go. You will know when things are stable, and the fish are going to be there for an extended period of time when the carp finally show up.
