Fishing Career

Featured Replies

I am looking into finding a career in the fishing industry.  I am 19 years old and currently enrolled in my local community college  I have a passion for fishing, particularly steel head fishing  I am a 3rd generation steelhead fisherman and I have the fly fishing/Center pin down to an art.I love the river and I want a career where I can make a difference to people looking into any type of fishing.  Some people are not as fortunate as I have been being born into the love of fishing  I would like to help those people learn the art of fishing and the love of the river.

Any suggestions how I can go about achieving this goal?

Sincerely,

Alec Hassen

Do you know anyone who is currently making a living doing what you want to do? Take them out to dinner and have a long talk with them.

Best bet would be to start guiding part time most likely until you think you are profitable enough to go full time with it. Nothing about it is easy, and I would argue that it takes a long time before you are profitable at all. (not you in particular, a guide in general). Make small, achievable goals and and start working your way towards them. Too often I see people that want to go from zero to 60 in the snap of a finger. Take your time, do it right and set/achieve smaller goals along the way.

How about studying to become a Fisheries Biologist? You can work for the state and help manage fish populations in places where people enjoy fishing.

keep going with school!
