Help....switching from 12v trolling motor to 24v

Featured Replies

Hey guys....just bought a new 24 volt trolling motor that i'm putting on my tracker 175. My question is can i still use the original 2 prong plug that was used for the 12volt motor or do i need a 3 prong or something else.....thought i would ask on here first.....thanks guys.

Is it 24 or 12/24?.  If straight 24V, then all you need is a two prong plug.  Now, if you can use the same one or not depends on how much larger you went on size motors.  Even though you went to 24V and should actually pull less current, if you went BIG, it may even pull more current and need to upgrade the plug/wiring and breakers.

If it's a 12/24, then you will need a third wire and three prong plug

It's a straight 24....65lb thrust.....i did have a 55lb thrust 12 volt.....so do you think i will still be ok with the 2 prong plug? I really appreciate the help.

If you were not having problems before with breakers tripping and plugs heating up, you should be fine now.  That motor should be pulling fewer amps than the one you took off.

awesome.....thanks for the help.

Just make sure you have your two batteries hooked up correctly.  Yes there is a way to do it wrong.  Guess how I know.  A breaker is also a good idea.
