Early River Trout?

Featured Replies

Hello Everyone,

Cabin fever is really starting to get the best of me and I am dying to get out there to start catching some fish here in Mass!  There is a smaller river near me in central mass that I've been scoping out and possibly start fishing...   I am thinking of picking up an ultralight set up this week to test the waters with in the near future...  I do have some questions however....  Is it too early to catch anything?  What lures/bait would work the best for this time of year?

Thanks

Never too early for trout fishing! early C&R season opened up on January 2nd this year. I caught one the weekend after that and I caught this one a couple weeks ago! Inline spinners work well. I like fishing a small spoon in deeper pockets, and live worms will always catch a few.

Mass here as well. Try an UL set-up tossing a 2" Bobby Garland's Baby Shad on a 1/16 oz. ball head jig. You'll get bit.

never too early to catch something- they have to eat year round! Use smaller lures and work them slower than normal.

Slowly twitch jigs in the current while keeping them close to the bottom, or drift baits with as little weight as you can get away with.
