Is there a general T-rigging hook sizing guide?

Featured Replies

Can any of you good people give me a general hook size for rigging some basic worms, senkos, 3 1/2 tiki sticks. 5 inch kinami baits, 4.75 bass assassin worms. I caught my first 5 t-rigged bass this week on senko's and yes some of my family hooked me up with the rest of what I am asking here. Thanks you guys have been so helpful and bass fishing just gets better and better for me.

It all boils down to personal preferance. I personally want as much action from the plastic as I can get so I tend to go with a smaller hook than most people. With the baits that you mintioned I would go with a 1/0 hook or even a #1.

Wow, those are small (to me).  With the senkos/kinamis I always use a 4/0 EWG.  I'm not familiar with the other baits.  But for a small worm (less than 5") I'd probably go with a 3/0 or maybe (rarely) a 2/0.

Exept from the 3.5" lure , for the rest a 3/0 EWG is ideal

For 5" Senkos and clones, I use a 4/0 extra-wide-gap. My general rule of thumb is to use a hook with a gap of at least double the diameter of the plastic. That way, when it's rigged, there is enough remaining gap to get through the plastic and into the fish.

A whole lot of what we "discuss" on here boils down to personal preference. What Marty said about "hook with a gap at least double the diameter of the plastic" sounds pretty good to me. Not too long ago I changed over to Gammi EWG #2 #3 #4 and (for me) that just about covers everything...

Just for personal preferences, I run my 5" tiki sticks with a 3/0 hook.  I just recently bought a couple packages of eagle claw hooks, in red/ 3/0.  They are nice, but I need to smash the barbs...  lol  I love running a barbless hook because it allows me to catch and release easier, and I loose no more, or less than on the barbed.  I usually hook the hooks Texas style, with a skin embedded style!  That way when the fish grabs the worm, it yanks it down to catch that hook!  ;)
