Drop shot rod

Featured Replies

I really got into drop shot fishing last year and used a skeet reese drop shot rod and it did everything it needed to do.  Well come now and I bought a new Dobyns champion extreme flipping rod and couldn't believe the feeling vs my 100$ rod.  Now saying if I had 3-350 to spend on just a rod what would you guys suggest and warranty is a big factor.   Thanks guys looking to add another rod to the arsenal.  This was my biggest last year using a roboworm

I tried a bunch of rods and I ended with the 7'6" Phenix UMBX Med/Fast. The Med rating is a little much. The tip is every bit as soft as the multiple ML rods I had but it has a lot more power.

I wouldn't trade it for anything.

Why is warranty a big factor?  Just curious, I've actually only broken one rod in 25 years of fishing which was a Dobyns Champ Extreme.  Had a bad experience and now I'm mostly custom.

For that price you could talk to one of the sponsors here and see if they could set you up with a DS rod.  Custom rod that looks and fishes exactly the way you want it.  DVT does SUPERB work.  It's nice to have a blank that's not only sensitive, but the exact action your looking for as well.

If that's not an option honestly any of the major players will work.  NRX, Phenix, Kistler, St Croix, 13.  At that price range IMO most manufacturers rods compete directly against each other and brand loyalty plays a larger role than actual rod performance.

Whatever brand you pick I'd recommend a Medium/Extra Fast rod for dropshotting.

ML XF will give most rods a little bit more backbone. I would say M XF for a shakey head.

I see you are familiar with Dobyns, I'd look into a dx742sf. Also makes a nice rod for swimming grubs. I like the extra length over 7' rods when fishing light line with big fish.

I just like the idea for the money if I do break it, it will be covered.  Ill actually be meeting up with DVT next week he is about an hour away from me.

I will be mainly using 3/8 to 1/2 weight,  my hands aren't the most sensitive hands so thats a big thing I'm trying to do.  The rod I have now isn't very sensitive at least to me.
