Hair/bucktail jig rod?

Featured Replies

Started tying my own hair jigs. I want to dedicate a rod to them. The largest I would throw is 1/4 oz. Any suggestions?

I throw my Micro Jigs on a 7' ML Bait Casting Rod. I use trailers so I get to about 1/4 or 5/16 in weight. A 7' ML Spinning would work too. Any lighter than an 1/8oz I'd go with a light.

Now that I really think about it. The biggest I would throw on that rod is a 3/8 oz all the way down to weightless worm or grub with a little split shot is about my lightest. But I'm a little hesitant to go to a light rod. I already have some sunline 7 pound flourocarbon so that's what I would be spooling with. Is there really that big of a difference from a ML to a L?

I would be hesitant to throw a 3/8 oz jig on a light rod. I use a 7' ML Avid and it handles 1/8 to 3/8 oz well. If you are going to be ripping your hair jigs through weeds, I would step up to a M, maybe slightly shorter and stiffer. If you are fishing open water, a ML will work well.

Not sure if you misread or not but lighter than 1/8 calls for a light. iE 1/16 to 1/64

I have a couple 7'ML-F rods and they were all closer to medium power rods and they were fine but I needed something a little softer. I ended up getting a St. Croix Avid X 7'ML-F, I was actually torn between that rod and the 6'9" ML-XF because the extra fast model has some more backbone so it it rated to 1/2oz but the tip was just a hair too soft, the 7' ML is perfect. I throw micro jigs that are 1/16oz up to 3/16oz in both silicone and rubber along with hair jigs and it is perfect for it. You got enough tip to cast but it is far from a buggy whip, it is a true fast action that isn't going to overpower the smalle size 2 Aberdeen hooks but still has the backbone to drive a more stout hook like 1X strong with no problem at all.

Get a medium lite, that's what I use for jigs under 1/8 ounce.  Although a light powered rod is rated for the lure weights you mentioned, you will have a hard time setting the hook on bass.  And you certainly couldn't set the hook with a lite power rod on a 3/8 ounce jig.

If that is the Tourney Trail 7' ML with the Mod-fast action you'll have trouble with light biters. The 2 problems with that rod is it is not close to a medium light, it is a medium in power and the mod fast action makes it more of an in-line spinner rod than a hair jig rod as you'll have decreased sensitivity. You want a fast or extra fast action, not a mod-fast , but it might not be the same rod so you could still be fine.

I'll double check again when I get off work. But I'm pretty positive that's what the specs where. It was also a two piece rod. I was really surprised to see it in the store because they didn't have that model listed online.

Shoot. I guess I just misread the rod in the store. You are correct, it is the rod you thought. Mod-fast. I'll go try it out. Hopefully I will be fine. Maybe I can return it and swap.
