Orochi vs Champ CB - Topwater/Sq bill rod

Featured Replies

Looking for peoples opinions on the following models:

Dobyns Champion:

- 684CB

- 685CB

Orochi XX:

-Jerkbait Special 6'8

- Spinnerbait Special 6'10

I'm trying to find an all around rod to pull double duty for topwater & squarebills. I'll be using mono, so my biggest concern is having a stiff enough rod to use with mono (hook sets, working walking baits) as well as a limber enough rod to keep a fish pinned with treble hooks. I have multiple XX and champion rods so I know both are great quality. If you have experience with any, please feel free to share your opinions on which will have the best compromise between stiffness and limberness WITH straight mono only.

I have a xx jerk bait special and I use it for top water, jerk baits and cranks.  I think it work well for you.  It's not a noodle and has plenty of backbone yet parabolic when a fish is on.

Don't own any Dobyn's, but I do own both Orochi XX models you listed.

You would probably find both to work well for you.  Both have a very similar taper, the SS is noticeably more powerful though...

I use my JBS mostly for larger jerkbaits since I have a 110 Stick for my primary jerkbait rod...The JBS handles baits like the Ito Shiner and 110 Magnum just fine for me, so it's not going to be under-powered with your typical topwaters and/or squarebills.  For the 2 specific techniques you listed, I'd pick the JBS.

I have the jerkbait special and spinnerbait special.  The jbs taper is softer than the sbs. Not to my liking when using jerkbaits with braid, and with mono I think I'd totally hate it. I do throw s cranks and other squarebills on it. Also some small poppers. It works fine for that stuff and I'd have no problem recommending it, but I tend to prefer the sbs more for all of those baits.

I own the 684 and 685. Never fished the other ones you mentioned. The 685 hands down has my vote for techniques you want. Also can make a great jerkbait Rod as well as shallow cranks. The 684 is too soft for the squarebills IMO. 684 is my jerkbait rod 685 is my top water Rod.
