FIRST ROD AND REEL

Featured Replies

Hey guys, I'm looking into getting my first bait caster setup. SO far, I've narrowed it down to 2 rods and 2 reels. The first reel is a "Daiwa Aird Coastal", and the other is a "Lews Speed Spool LFS". The choices of rods are the "Okuma Reflexion", and the "No. *** Hellbent". They are all around the same price-point. Since I have no background with any of these, I would greatly appreciate your guys help.

-Thanks

I'll just say that I really like my LFS, sweet reel for the price.

Welcome aboard!

I'll let others chime in who have used those
reels. I use Shimano, and have plenty of
experience with a Daiwa Lexa. I do like the
Lexa quite a bit, but I've since given it to
one of my boys.

So I can recommend the Daiwa brand...

of those 2 reels, i'd take the lew's lfs all day, every day. but i have no experience with either rod, so i can't help you much there.

Another vote for Lew's.

I can't speak for that Daiwa, but my first ever BC reel was a vintage 1983 PMF-1000 Magforce reel. I just stopped using it in 2015 because it finally fell apart, literally. They sent me levelwind and cast control parts for it twice, free of charge-+not even shipping! Their quality can be over-the-top these days. But I can't speak for that particular reel.

Maybe I just gave you another vote for Daiwa. LOL. Choose widely and read all the reviews on BPS, Cabela's, etc.

The lews lfs speed spool can't be beat for  $80. I haven't fished either rod however the Hell bent rods feel like nice rods for the money

After comparing the 2, take the Lew's. No comparison, really.

Also, I'll just say lews customer service is excellent. I took mine apart to clean this winter and ended up breaking a small plastic part on the sideplate assembly that controlled the braking system. It was completely my fault but I called them up and they ended up sending me the part, and the rest of the assembly (which I did not ask for them to do) free of charge, and sent it priority mail. I had the new part in the reel in just a couple days and now I have spare parts if anything else on that side breaks.
