Lews Maintenance

Featured Replies

I just bought a Lews Tournament MB. This is my first baitcaster and was kind of pricey for me so I'd like to keep it nice as long as I can. What should I do before I use it and how do I maintain it after (cleaning and oiling and such)?

Fish it as is hard for a season then have it deep cleaned annually. In the interim keep the level wind clear of debris and oiled lightly. Pull the spool periodically and swab out the frame and spool rim. Add a drop of oil to the side of each spool bearing every 4-6 trips or as needed.

Outside of the suggestions offered above, if it is like other Lews reels I have had apart, you will also need a spool bearing tool or plier of some sort to remove the spool bearing. Not a cheap tool ($30ish) but if you have a few reels and plan on doing regular maintenance it would be a good investment. Otherwise send it to a shop like DVT to work on.
