Guest JoshKeller
Hey guys. I currently have a 16' fiberglass bass boat. I'm not completely sure of the weight, but its basically got an anchor on the back.. That is a 1961 75 hp evinrude. I'm looking to replace the motor, and the maximum rating is 115. I'd like to get around a 50 hp, as thats what my budget allows. Will a 50 get the boat up on plane? My other big reason for this is the boat only has a 20 gallon gas tank. (you really cant complain for $600)
Guest JoshKeller
Well I had a photo of the boat. If that'll help answer the question, I'll email it. I couldnt get it to post on the boards.
gamblerOH
I know this should be in the flea market section but I have a 1988 merc 115 with controls and hydraulic steering for $900, runs perfect and has no problems. I ahd it on a deep-V lake boat and the boat has finally rotted away so the motor is the best thing about it.
Pa Angler
Put a bigger motor on then the 50 sometimes a bigger motor will get better fuel economy just because it doesn't have to work as hard. If it were my boat I would not put anything less than a 75hp motor on. I have an aluminum Tracker 17' deep V now with a 90hp Merc on with two anglers, gear and 30gallons of gas I can reach 42mph. That 115hp motor that the Gambler has sounds good plus you may hit 50mph with that one if speed is on your mind. Chow The Pa Angler
FL_fisher
pa angler is right you will end up useing up more fuel with a 50 than you would with a bigger motor. You will also be getting places faster .That boat might not even plain with a 50. Guest JoshKeller
Sounds like a great motor Gambler. I wish I would have known 2 months ago when I lived in WV. Shipping it would cost a small fortune, and after driving 26 hours straight 3 times from WV to TX, I'm done with driving long distances for a while! gamblerOH
What part of WV did you live in?
Eagle
Fuel Economy = Four-Stroke....I would go with a 80 to 100 hp fourstroke...They got the power to get this thing up...If you have to go with something a litle smaller and less expensive go for the Yamaha T60. High thrust motor that I know will do well for you also.
Guest JoshKeller
Gambler, I was in Martinsburg. Eagle, while a 4 stroke would be ideal, I'm a poor college student living in my grandma's guest house. I had this 2002 Mercury 50hp offered to me for $750 since the owner messed up his boat pretty badly. His boat was hit by a driver running a red light, and basically tore up the entire front half of the boat. He has given me a verbal "warrunty" that it'll run great for a long time, and said that if it didnt plane the boat, (he had it on a 17' fiberglass boat with a hydrofin), I could take it off and he'd give me my money back. Keep in mind that I also usually fish alone (better practice when your not distracted by position someone in the back of the boat, talking, etc), carry 5 rods and reels, and 6 plano boxes. 2 Lifejackets, 1 throwable, 12v trolling motor, and thats basically all of the gear I take. I also pull it with a 2.2L 4 cyl. 2001 Chevy s-10 5 sp., and it has no trouble at all pulling it, so I'm not sure the boat is even over 1,000 lbs. I dont want it to sound like I'm just asking for advice for the sake of an argument, I just wanted to get all the facts I possible know about it that I didnt include in the other posts. If any other pictures would be helpful, I have a digital and can take them of about any part of the boat. I'd like to get the 'rude running, however, it has no spark. I've replaced the entire magneto assembly, points, condenser, etc, etc ,etc, to no avail. I ran it, and it ran great, let it sit for a week, then no spark no matter what I tried. I think it was just time for the old gal to go. :'(
