For a trolling motor battery in a canoe, do you have to have a battery box or can you just put the battery in a crate or something? Thanks

Most regulations require the battery posts be covered. A battery box insures the battery terminals are not exposed where they could get shorted out and cause a fire.

Think I will definitely get a box. My new question is, for a box that says it will fit group size 24 batteries, will it fit a 12 volt battery? Thanks.

I have a Minn Kota box. I'd really like it if it weren't for the fact that the positive terminal stripped out a while ago. Can't tighten the positive lead too much now. Otherwise it's a great box; had room in it for my deep cycle TM battery and a small one next to it for my sonar.

A group 24 size battery is a 12 volt. It's just a smaller physical size than a group 27 size battery.
