tnroadrnr
Sunday I was fishing and I stumbled and took a pretty good fall. Luckily I fell in the boat. It got me to thinking, if I had fallen out of the boat how would I have gotten back in? ??? I know some of the new boats have a built in ladder. Do any of you have any kind of ladder you may have mounted on your bass boat?
Shad_Master
My local club has an occasional award that is presented to those who deserve the title "human bobber". I was "fortunate ???" enough to win one last year for a tumble I took during one of our tournaments. The story is I had gone to the tournament with my boat, but my partner didn't make it. Another guy did not have a partner so I decided to go in his boat. He had seat for the back, but it was on two pedestals so it was too high for me to sit on and I was just leaning against it like a butt seat. As we were moving from one area to another under the trolling motor, I went to lean back against the seat and only caught one corner. The seat swiveled, crossing my feet and pitching me forward on the back deck. I was positioned on my hands and knees with my butt higher than my head. When my partner turned around to see what happended, he caused the boat to rock which pushed my butt on over and deposited me, head first, into the lake. I managed to get to the surface and grabbed onto the boat and put my foot on the prop to use as a "ladder" to push myself up onto the deck. Besides my embarrassment :-[, I also was > because I lost the rod and reel I was holding at the time. Another one of our guys (who witnessed this) has now fashioned a ladder from ski rope and PVC pipe and attached it to the back of his Tracker (just in case). Muddpuppy
I have a ladder but normally do not carry it, I do have a rope that I could pull it to shallow water with that I leave attached to the eye. I have had a few close calls in the past few years, prior to that it didn't matter that much if I went over board, like it would now. I was with a friend a while back and trying to get the net and help him land a fish and he either hit a stump or turned the t. motor and I hit the windshield with my side. With my back it messed me up and left a nasty bruse but I would have gone over if it hadn't been for it. He did the same thing a week or so later and broke the wind shield out, that slowed him down a little bit. I like the rope ladder idea that wouldn't take up as much room. One thing that concerns me is getting tangled in trotlines.
Shad_Master
Actually the rope ladder is only 3 or 4 rungs and is attached to the deck. He keeps it rolled up, but can reach it by holding on to the transom on the passenger side. My best advice -- PFD's, don't leave the dock without 'em! Ben
Shot, I dive in a lot of times just to cool off in the hot summer. I have no problems just getting back in over the side of my Stratos 285. If you're in a Jon or a pointed hull, climb back in the front. If you're physically impaired, it's no trouble to use the motor to climb in the back. Pa Angler
A couple of fellow angler's boat they were on got swamped and they did go for a swim luckily the boat had flotation foam in it and was close enough to shore that they could get the boat there to refloat it. Low_Budget_Hooker
regardless of size,...always re-enter a jon boat from the bow, never from one of the sides.

Shad_Master
Actually what makes the story even better is that I was one of three "human bobber" award winners last year. The first guy to go in, was setting the hook on a small mouth when the seat on the back deck came loose and he tumbled over the transom. Interestingly, it was about two weeks later when I went in and my partner and I had just been talking with him and his partner right before it happened and they saw the whole thing. A month later, he was fishing with a guy who came into a cove on plane and walked to the front of the boat to drop the trolling motor when they hit a stump. He went off the point with the trolling motor cord still in his hand. We decided the the first guy was so embarrassed that he was planning to take us all out one at a time
settle1
from back in my water skiing days we always used the motor to climb back in the boat ....we had old worn out boats back then with no ladders....just be carefull and take your time so you wont slip
