Boy Scout Tackle Donation Idea

Recommended Posts

First and foremost, if this thread is not allowed, I apologize and do promptly take it down.

Something dawned on me today and I thought I would run it by the bass resource community. A good friend of mine has taken part volunteering with the Lake Cumberland Division of Boy Scouts here in south central Kentucky. He has decided to attempt to gather up some fishing supplies for his troops that do not have any and partake in introducing fishing to some of the scouts. I have already gathered a couple of old spare fishing poles and some older lures/lures I no longer use to donate to him. Do you guys think I would have success with buying old excess lures/accepting donations for this cause on the forums?

There was a local boy scout troop in California looking for donations last year as well.  I think veterans/Boy Scouts are a great idea for people who have excess tackle they want to donate, but the problem is it's hard to find groups like this that have the need, and people don't just want to send tackle to a random veteran group or Boy Scout Troop that have no need for fishing tackle.

If you have the address to the Boy Scout Troop I'm sure people would be willing to send direct.

Maybe try the flea market on this site. I'm sure some of the guys on here will give away or sell you some stuff really cheap.

I'm a level younger in the Cub Scouts, but what I noticed during our fishing derbies, was that for the most part, the boys were covered.  No one threw anything other than worms, bread, hot dogs, etc.  No lures.  What we did need, was additional hands to help land/unhook/bait, and additional rigs for the brothers/sisters that also wanted to participate.  I'd check and make sure whatever unit you're donating to would make good use out of it.  Once a year trip?  Several throughout the warm seasons?  Chances are there are several units in your area that have different goals in mind.

We don't do charities, unless they are an official BassResource charity, like our veteran's program and the hurricane relief we did a few years ago.

I have no problem leaving this up, since you can't be the only one to ever try this, and maybe someone can help you out.

By the time I was in Cub Scouts, I was baiting my own hooks, and landing and unhooking my own fish.  I grant you that at that age I was still using a bamboo cane pole with about 10 feet of heavy braid tied on the end, but I was fishing on my own.

I've got a bunch of tackle I need to get rid of and didn't want to just dump it off at the local Goodwill truck.  I was going to donate some to a boy scout troop a few years back but got super lazy and never followed up on it.  Anyone that knows a place that could use some tackle, let me know either here or via a PM.  I'll probably stuff a few medium sized Priority Flat Rate box to the gills and send it off.
