Hey guys. I'm trying to decide whether to get a new medium power baitcaster for cranks and topwater and what not or get a medium lite spinning rod for dropshots. I have 6 other rods 3 baitcasters and 3 spinning but not in those powers. And I just wanted opinions on what you guys thought was more important to add to the arsenal. Thanks!

The proper answer is to get both. 

You can drop shot with a medium fast spinning rod. If that helps you decide.

I would love to buy both. But the boss lady won't let me. And I have been dropshoting with my medium fast spinning rod and has seemed to work fine. My buddy just suggested a medium lite

The two are very different. You're just gonna have to talk it over in your head, decide on one that seems a more pressing need at this time.

I regularly drop shot with my medium powered spinning.  No problems no need to get a ML.  I'd go with the baitcaster.

Now another question. If I go with the baitcaster I'm staying around 100 for a budget. So I was thinking either a ghost or the blackout. I have a MH ghost and i love it. but I've heard nothing but good things about the blackout. What do you think?

I vote blackout dude to the chance of weak eyelets on the ghost. Weak eyelets are the last thing you want throwing top water. 

I've been wanting to try the blackout. I haven't had any problems with my ghost and it's probably my most used rod. 

For that budget I would go either Powell 6104 cb glass composite or 704 cb med moderate. If not them then a Dobyns Fury Fr 705CB.  They are all really nice rods and retail for $110.  Check them out.  I would consider a Diawa Tatula 5.4 or 6.3-1 for a good reel.

I am lucky my local tackle shop stocks all of these rods, along with Cashion, NO.8., Duckett and others

Yeah I can go to d&r sportscenter it's about 15 min away. It's owned by the Vandam's they have a ton of rods

Lucky you!! Really I am fishing some of each of the DObyns and Powells and they are really nicely balanced and have some good components. I had two NO.8 is in my hand last week and they were okay but I like the feel of the others. Strictly personal opinion.  Since you want to do both cranks and topwaters I think the Dobyns Fury FR705CB would be my number one choice. It has been designed exactly to do that job.  They run $110

It's a really awesome fishing store. We are pretty lucky here in kalamazoo! And I will check that rod out for sure! I know a lot of it is personal preference on feel and balance and what not. So getting them in my hands will help a lot 

Make sure you mount your favorite reel on it because it affects the balance and feel. I was playing with a Tatula, so not a super small reel but it is one I trust.  In the last two years I have sold and upgraded 6 reels to Tatulas and Tatula R's. I also purchased an Exceller ( darn budget for tackle ran out). LOL. There is always next year!

Haha. I dont have any daiwa's. I'm a huge fan of lews. I love their reels. Never tried there rods though

I'd go with the bait caster also. There are a lot of good rods in that price range. I'd be looking at the St Croix rage or avid neo (both have scIII blanks like the avid, avid X, and new mojos) on sale on the St croix site, or the 6'9" Fenwick smallmouth rod. I like a medium power fast action though for those techs. If you want a more moderate rod I'd look at the Fenwick 6'10" med heavy/ mod fast. It's more like a medium to me but us awesome for cranks to 10' or so, spinnerbaits, buzzbaits, and about any reaction bait I've tried on it. The falcon bucoo trap caster, Dobyns fury, and the daily tatula are all more moderate blanks and can all be found around that price also.

Which technique do you use the most? Go with that set up. Then get the other set up when the boss lets you. LOL

Better go with the Baitcaster.  You don't sleep with your buddy!

I have a blackout and really like it.  Never had a ghost in my hands so I can't say if one is better than the other just that the blackout is a great rod, probably my favorite rod of all that I own.  The only thing I own that's close is a St Croix Legend that I got used last weekend or possiably my father in law's mojo bass that I've used a few times.  I don't think you'll be disappointed if you go with a blackout.  It sounds like you have a local shop where you can get a good look and feel for several different rods so I say go look at a bunch and see if one of them speaks to you.
