Crankbait that resembles a Round Goby

Featured Replies

For the Great Lakes fisherman here, I am in search of a crankbait that resembles a Round Goby which is common to many of our Great Lakes.

I will be fishing the bait in depths of 13-18 feet.

I use alot of cranks, especially deep divers, so I have some ideas (such as a Norman DD22) but am looking for input from anyone willing to share.

Thanks in advance...

Shimano DC-60N. You can buy these lures here:  www.ichibantackle.com

Your options become more limited with the need of a crankbait that will run 13'-18' deep.

The 2 lures I can think of offhand that will actually go that deep, and also resemble the rounded,  fat body of a goby are a Jackall Muscle Deep 15+

And the (discontinued but still pretty available on ebay) Rapala FR7 Down Deep Rattlin Fat Rap:

Both of these lures have a wide, flat head like a Goby and will get into the low-mid teens with the proper equipment.

Thanks for the suggestions, nice cranks too!

After making my original post I actually found that Norman actually has a Goby color in it's DD22 line. I also found that the Norman Watermelon color is also pretty close to Goby. I orderd a DD22 in Goby and a DD22 Suspend +4 in Watermelon (not offered in Goby).

My thoughts are that a Goby kind of bumps along the bottom, when it hits a drop off or something like that it kind of floats downward (if not being pursued), that suspend bait may just do the trick.

Can't wait to try them out.....

Leo,

I am just a beginner when it comes to fishing the Great Lakes so take this with a grain of salt because I am no expert but I've been told that Gobies have no swim bladder and just "drag" across the bottom like a sucker fish.  This is why dragging tubes is so effective.

So when I think of a crankbait's action compared to that I dont know that you'll be mimicking a gobie very well with a crankbait.  Just food for thought.

Again, take it with a grain of salt.  For all I know that pattern could become the next great thing on the Great Lakes and I'm full of poop.
