Which Line For Which Rod?

Featured Replies

So, I have a 6'6 MH, a 6'6 MF and a 6'9 ML(all spinning). I have pure mono on the MF, braid to mono on my ML and braid to fluoro on my MH.

Is that smart? I'm debating if I should switch it up but i'm not 100% sure .

Depends on what techniques you use/plan to use these combos for.

I have 30lb power pro on my 7'0 mh baitcaster. I use this for frogs, jigging and other heavy lures. With jigging and frogging you need strong line for hook sets and getting through heavy cover. I have never tried punching but I know it also needs heavy line. I use no leader.

On my 7'0 mh spinning rig I have 12lb trilene xl. I like this line and its cheap too. I use this rod for weighted plastics, some lures and Texas rig stuff. I also use it for jerk baits and other lures that need that stiff tip.

On my 6'6 mh spinning rig I use 10lb trilene xl. I use this rig for weightless soft plastics mostly.

I have a roll of fluorocarbon that I will be trying when I need to reline. I am new to bass fishing so I'm sure someone has better advice then me. Just telling you what I have found to be a good set up for the fishing I do.

If you want to increase sensitivity for a technique, if you want to better feel bites, if you want better hook sets, especially on long casts, go braid.  If you use one rod mostly for surface, use mono or mono leader to keep the line on the surface.  FC will sink.

If you want line strength greater than about 8 or 10, with spin, go braid.  I don't like trying to handle heavier FC or mono on a spin reel, although I know a lot of people do it. 15# braid casts and manages much better than 10 # mono, orders of magnitude better than 10 # FC. (especially on smaller reels) I know some will argue otherwise, and may be right for some expensive, special, FC, but generally what I say is true.

Braid usually can be quite twisted and still perform well.  Its density is almost the same as mono so will stay on the surface.  FC is about 50% higher and will sink.

One last thought, if you really like what you have, if it really works for you, leave it alone.

Well, I've been using my MF for top water and weightless senkos as well as crankbaits.

My ML for drop shotting and ned rigs

& my MH for heavy jigs, texas rigs, carolina rigs and heavy buzzbaits.

I just want to know what I should use for each rod. I like what I have, big time--but if I can improve and some things are better suited for each rod, then I'd like to switch
