Fine wire vs superline

Featured Replies

What is the rule of thumb when using fine wire vs superline? I just bought some Berkeley EWG 5/O hooks and noticed they say superline. Looking at them they are much thicker than my gammy ewgs. I had planned to use them for 4.3" keitechs. Will this work fine or should I switch to fine  wire?

Hook wire size choice is often dictated by where you're presenting your bait and then the tackle that matches those conditions.

Tug of war areas of Heavy cover where a bait is casted on plus size tackle with a locked down drag and heavy often braided line can benefit from a heavy wire (superline hook).

In just about every other situation, as long as the hook size "fits" the bait, meaning the gap of the hook is sufficient to accommodate the baits girth and will allow full penetration with out hampering it's action, a standard wire hook usually works well.

Got it. So if I planned to swim my plastics through thick grass I should stick with the superline, otherwise I'll stick to my fine wire.  Thanks.
