lower unit

Featured Replies

I dont need to change my lower unit right now but can yall tell me how to change the lower unit or a web site the tells me how. and about how much dose one cost, and do I have to change the whole lower unit or just grase every thing up.

To answer your questions with a question. Why do you think your lower unit needs changing?

First, there are too many different kinds to answer this without knowing the motor's Make, Size, Model Year. I will say LU's are not cheap and are not just changed out ever so often like they are a disposable item.

As one has already asked, why. You should change the gear oil at least every fall and change the water pump, and grease splines every three or four years but unless it's making strange noises or your getting lots of metal flakes/water when you change the oil, not sure why you would want to change it.

It is not uncommon for a lower unit to cost $5,000 plus for

your bigger motors.

Get a Clymer or Seloc manual for your motor. You can order them from Amazon, or pick one up at West Marine or Boat USA. The manual will walk you through the process. BUT, I also would like to know why you think you need to replace it?
