Braided line and using a sharpie... I don't get it

Not so sure this is correct.   Black is the absorption of all light, but you only need reflection of light to see a color. Black is one of the highest contrast colors there are and stands out very well in all shades of water.    In fact most all colors turn to a shade of gray/black after several feet in the water column.  

I just run the line over a spike it marker as it fades. Never understood caring enough about line visibilty to run a sharpie over the line but not caring about the strong smell off a sharpie potentially giving negative cues to fish.
