Whopper Plopper

Featured Replies

I have to be honest, and please pardon my ignorance...I refused to buy a whopper plopper because of its silly name. That, and the surface bite on my local lake is (was) 100% non-existent. So, hearing all the hype, I broke down and bought one. I took it out yesterday and it quickly became apparent why so many people are raving about them. I'm telling you, I've thrown EVERY surface lure out there, and the fish ignored every one of them. They sure do like the WP though!

I had a blast watching the reactions to this bait. I only landed 3 or 4 fish on it, but I had many lookers who came up to take a swipe at it, but many of them seemed hesitant to commit. However, I immediately followed-up on the bashful ones with a wacky senko, which must have really ticked them off, because every one of them crushed the worm as soon as it hit the water. Lots of fun! Over the past two days, I've caught 2-6lb'ers, 3-4lb'ers, and dozens of 2-3lb'ers.

I have been debating buying one as well. This confirmed I AM going to pick one up.

What size and color do you guys that use them recommend?

What line type and lb test do you use on it?

I'd hate to lose a ~$16 lure running the wrong line :)

I have the 90mm, in "Loon". I fished it on braid, 15lb power pro slick. The 130 is pretty big.

If i had  multiple rods i would fish it with non braided line. ive had them snap off twice when my reel locked up mid cast and with braid there is no forgiveness.

luckily i was able to get them back. i still use them on 30 lbs braid but i adjust my reel and make gentle lobs rather than heaving it out.

the 130 is big but i prefer to use them over the 90.  with the 90 it tends to not float as good and if you replace the trebles and if its a butt hair heavier it wont swim as well at the start of the retrieve. Plus the 130s catches smaller ones too.

If you're looking for numbers the 90 is the way to go. If you're like me and searching for that one big bite the the 130 is a must have. It's not some goofy phrase when people say big baits catch big fish. It's just a fact. I love the whopper plopper.

On the 90 you can use a medium rod and between 8 to 15 lb test. The 130 needs at least a MH to H rod and 15 lb test or more. The 190 requires a H to XH swimbait rod with minimum of 20 lb test or more.

I went to Cabela's and they didn't have a single whopper plopper :(

The guy didn't even know what I was talking about. He had to look it up on the computer and they were all out.

I have a 90 in yellow head. I've caught about 20 fish on it with about 6 hours of use. The lure gets a lot of followers and some take the thing at the last possible second. The biggest I've gotten being only 1.25 lbs but that's more reflective of where I was fishing I believe. I have a 130 in munky butt color and have only fished it for 30 minutes with zero bites.

I was fishing the 90 on 12 lb mono and a spinning setup. Now I'm using 30 lb power pro braid on a Medium casting setup  for both.

Par for the course in Cabela's fishing department.
