Fuji Rod?

Recommended Posts

A couple years ago a guy I used to work with gave me some old rods and reels he had.  Nothing special and I used them as trade in bait at BPS except for this one 5"6" pistol grip rod.  It had a foil label that was pretty well worn out except I could make out Fuji.  The reel seat is an old slotted screw down type with gnarled edges for finger tightening.  Also Fuji.  It has really nice old school guides.  It's pretty stout but it has a nice soft tip.....about a medium.  I finally got around to cleaning it up today and threw a Pro Qualifier I had laying around on it.  Now I have a nice "new" top water/jerk bait rod!  It's heavy and it's gonna take me a bit to get used to the pistol again but I LIKE IT!!  Wouldn't wanna throw it all day every day but for what I'm gonna use it for, it's perfect!  YAY ME!!!

Anyone know if Fuji ever made or branded rods?  I can't find anything on line.

My wife and I had the opportunity to take a guide in Tennessee several years ago. We fished with him on Center Hill Lake for two days. Interestingly enough he fishes on the FLW tour. Craig has made a reputation for tossing homemade PopRs completely under docks into places most humans will never reach. His weapon of choice is a pair of custom built pistol grip 5 1/2 foot rods.  It was amazing to learn from him. It was like attending a private bass fishing school. The fish in my avatar is a Kentucky spot that weighed right at 7 pounds. With everyone going to longer rods no one remembers what great weapons those old rods can be especially around tight quarters. I have actually considered having a custom rod like that built using a modern lightweight blank and a newer style pistol grip using eva foam.

From Jim Ising of Anglers' Resource, the distributor for Fuji in the US.

"That was a Lew’s Speed Stick. His rods brought Fuji Guides to the US…and the rest is history. This company spun off Lews after he went out of bis.

Fuji has never offered a finished rod."
