I need to change out one of my thru hulls.  the person that owned the boat before thought it would be easy to fix a slow leak by inserting a smaller diameter piece of pvc in it.  it worked, but now the well doesnt drain as fast as water is pumped in.  If i leave the pump on i will eventually start over flowing.

my question is: once i get the old one out how does the new one adhere to the hull?  it looks like it is just white silicone.  but this is not a trial and error type project.  i dont want to go out on the water and start taking in major water down there, or worse yet the entire thru hull comes lose...you know the ending.

I would use 3M 5200.

I used latex painter's caulk, as per the local boat builders instructions and it's still sealed after two years.

It's what they use at the factory.

Getting the old one out may be an issue because they use 5200 and it's also an adhesive.  This may be why the previous owner went for the "quickie" solution.

Use marine silicone that you can get at almost any boat dealer. There may not be much or any difference between the marine and household silicone but few a little extra cost why take the chance. Silicone will last much longer without hardening than butyl, neoprene or any organic chalks.
