What to throw?

Recommended Posts

I am heading out tomorrow morning. A cold front moved in 2 days ago and it will be overcast with a shower here and there. Water temp. is in the low 70's and dropping. I'm thinking all topwater all the time or do you think I should throw a Shad colored crankbait or just slow down and drag a jig? I'm thinking the front has been around a couple of days so they should bite something moving. Am I on track here?

TLI (Too Little Information).

Fall fronts have less of an impact on fish than Spring and summer fronts do and can sometimes trigger a good bite BUT you have to feel the fish out and see what they tell you.  USUALLY I start fast and then slow down and then slow down even more if fast/and or slow isn't working.  Why do you want to use topwater?  Because you like to?  Good enough reason, I suppose, but it wouldn't be my first choice.  Once you've determined the fish are active and aggressive I might move to topwater but not until.  BUT that is just me.

Shad colored is generally always a pretty decent color but you would want to see what the water clarity and/or sky are telling you.  Dark water usually means either a dark lure or a bright, neon lure.  Dark water and dark sky, for me, suggests a bright, neon color.  But again, see what the fish tell you.

I love topwater fishing, and with those conditions I'd go for it. My go to would be a pop-r, but, if its going to be raining Id have buzzbait ready as well. So to answer the question "am I on track here"? Id say yes, but as your most likely well aware, anything can change in an instant while bass fishing. And,.. I have a jig at the ready every time I go fishing. I feel its an effective lure year round, not just for numbers of fish, but the big girls as well.

But to state a lure to "just" fish? Thats a rarity for me anytime of year, my deck has 5 or more rods ready to go whenever I head out.

throw what you think will work best, if that doesnt work then throw something else, if you think its a good topwater day throw some topwater, if that dont work then try something else.  remember the fish decide what they want, and bass can be picky, or they might be pretty free going and just feed when they get and oppertunity.
