  1. Dang that's something that I do regularly, I will have to remind myself to always apply gradual pressure from now on. wishing a full and speedy recovery to you.
  2. Love me some culprit ribbon tails. There's one hanging out the mouth of the fish in my pfp.
  3. Ah, makes a little more sense then. Still don't think it should just crap out like that though.
  4. I've got a 12 year old black max that I've cleaned once because the drag was gunked up. It still works great. No reason for a reel in that price range to have that issue in year 5, much less 8 months in. That's a warranty claim.
  5. Recently bought a new (to me) boat and I've used it enough to know I'm going to keep it for a while. Got all the little issues sorted out, time to put electronics on it. I'd prefer not to break the bank but want FFS on the bow and side scan at the console. I don't need giant screens, just something to find my way around new bigger lakes I now have access to and help find some offshore bites. Budget around 2k, but I could go 2500 if I wanted. For the bow unit, is the Lowrance eagle eye 9 any good? how much of a disparity is there between it and the flagship FFS units out there that cost much more? For the console, I'm debating the Lowrance Elite FS 7 vs the Eagle TS 9." Seems like bigger screen vs clearer image to me, with the bigger screen being slightly less expensive.
  6. Shouldn't be at the same water within a ten year period. So many great fisheries in that region.
  7. I didn't say who was running the boat. There's plenty of irresponsible adults, or those who simply aren't well experienced in boating. It's not about allowing the kids to drive, it's about safety and accessibility across the board.
  8. Exposed hook = lean into the fish Weedless = hit em' Circle hook = reel down That's as fancy as I get.
  9. Blakemore Casey's Classic Road Runner Heads 2pk - Tackle Warehouse Slightly different design, but very similar. Might be worth a try.
  10. I got spooled by a 32 pound grass carp a few years ago while fishing an underspin. It ended up being the biggest fish I have ever caught, and I wouldn't have landed it without a good knot around the spool.
  11. I use old school trilene for 90 percent of my fishing, even flipping. Imo it has better abrasion resistance than any flouro I have used. I am not sold on the fact that flouro has less stretch than mono, it seems comparable to me. Where the advantage comes in is that flouro sinks, leading to better sensitivity. How does that work if it has the same stretch? because when mono is sitting on top of the water, and your bait is on the bottom, this creates slack in the line. Flouro however, goes straight from rod tip to bait, and does not create this bow in the line. For long casts with bottom contact baits, this is a big advantage. However, it is not an advantage I'm willing to spend 30 dollars per spool of line for, outside of tournaments.
  12. somewhere between 5:1 to 9:1
  13. This is sort of my point, in racing they don't start kids out in full blown race cars, they start in karts. High school tourneys should be in jon boats with 10hp limit. This would simultaneously increase safety, and decrease barrier to entry. I've fished local tourneys with nothing but a trolling motor.
  14. This is not a race on a closed circuit; these are fishing tournaments on public water. The orgs have a responsibility to do whatever they can to keep bystanders on the lake safe. We need Horsepower restrictions and speed limits, especially in the lower divisions such as high school and college.
  15. Same situation here. I have had two things work lately, one where fish were stacked on brush piles just a little off the bank and I was catching them on a t-rig worm or jig, the other is just burning a lipless crank or chatter bait around to find scattered post spawners. Also gotten a few nice frog fish under matted veg in the middle of the day.
  16. Had an owl follow me all day trying to take fish from me. Scared the crap out of me at first because he flew in from behind me, He missed the fish but grabbed my thumb while smacking me upside the head with his wing. Cut my thumb pretty good from knuckle to fingernail. He never got brave enough to try that again, but he followed and watched for 4 hours straight.
  17. I've fished with 4 people in my tracker, but that was on an idle only lake where it was mostly pitching/flipping, so room wasn't a huge issue. Under 18 foot two is enough most of the time, id imagine you could comfortably have three in a bigger boat. six is just insane unless 2 or 3 of them are just there to tan.
  18. Bought it and took it out for the first time, quick 2 hours test run. Got a little slime on the carpet. Everything works as far as electronics, LiveWell, bilge, lights etc. I'm pretty happy with the layout and the amount of room I have to move. Big improvement over a 14' Jon with just the trolling motor for the bigger lakes. Only problem. The motor does cut off every once in a while, when you're idling occasionally, never above idle. but mostly when throttling down after running. Pretty much what he described. It runs fine at speed and gets a little over 30mph. First thing I plan to do is change the fuel filters but before I order those does anyone have any suggestions as to what else to check. Compression check came back good and it's running well at speed so I'm hoping it's a minor issue.
  19. Can I tie an FG? Depends if I have shoes on or not.
  20. It's also the only one I have to take my shoe off to tie.
  21. Recently got offered a family members boat, I know it has low hours and has never been ran very hard, 99% of the time he crappie fishes in a pond we both fish which is about 15 acres and doesn't have any stumps to do damage. Transom shows no signs of damage. Carpet is in good shape, seats are stained but no tears. Bilge pump, live well, etc all work. He said the motor sometimes seems to lose some power after running for some time but cranks and runs fine initially, sounds like fuel filter to me. 40hp merc 4 stroke. Only has 2d sonar that it came with, both bow and console. I'd probably upgrade that eventually. Boat has always been stored in an enclosed shelter. Any input appreciated.
  22. Looking to replace a couple of rods that have some wear on them, chipped the tip insert off my aird x 7mh, replaced it but overheated the blank the first time and it's more of a 6'10 now. My Shimano sellus is abrasive to line because of multiple guides, some I had to replace after purchase. Thinking about upgrading and the cashion Z2 caught my eye. Does anybody got a first hand opinion of it?
  23. 50-dollar bills lead to disaster
  24. How many could come off the bench and finish in the top half of the field in AOY? Not many, too many things to learn for someone that has only fished local. But the argument that average anglers could only ever compete on their home waters is bull hocks. Of course that's the only place they can compete; it's the only place they know. Not necessarily for any innate inability. It would take years to learn how to fish in all the different regions, and that is a lot of money invested in extracurricular practice. All while the economy is gone to trash and payouts are worse than they were in the early 2000s, in addition to sponsorship deals being harder to come by and less lucrative. Why would any average joe with a stable life want to go pro? They probably won't make it and end up majorly set back financially, or if they do make it the rewards really aren't all that great compared to other sports. These guys aren't getting rich, they are either kids born into money, guys that made a bunch of money so they could afford to fish, or they are barely scraping by because they need to go fish like they need to drink water. Honestly, if someone wanted to fish for a living, they are better of trying YouTube. The odds of making it are no better, heck they may be even worse. But the investment lost if you don't make it is far less than in pro fishing.
  25. I have a Dobyns Fury 735c with 50lb braid, really anything from 7' to 7'6 heavy with braided line 50lb+ is good to go. Some people say 7' isnt quite enough length, some say 7'6 is too long to walk the frog. I've used both with good success but 7'3 does seem to be most comfortable. Braided line is truly the most important part. Your frog matters too, I love my booyah pad crashers because they're soft. I'll throw a spro bronzeye when i find them on sale.
