Out of commission for 6 months

Featured Replies

Well, I really did it now. I tore my distal bicep tendon 3 weeks ago and will be having surgery to repair it tomorrow morning. At first the doctor thought it was a partial tear and would not require surgery, but the MRI is showing a complete tear so surgery is basically my only option if I want to have full use of my right arm.

Of course when I'm asked how I did this and I have to be honest that I did something really stupid. After a day of fishing I had put my boat on the trailer and when I went to hook the winch strap I noticed that the nose of the boat was about 2 inches off center - like that made any difference. Any way, I decided I could just jerk it over with my arm. Big mistake. I heard the tendon tear and of course there was a great deal of pain. I immediately knew I had screwed up big time.

Looking at 6 months recovery with PT and all. So, I'm out of commission until at least late August or so. You would think at 73 years old I would know better than to try moving a 1500 pound boat with just my arm. But lesson learned. I'll get through this but I'm not a happy camper right now.

And to add insult to injury, the bass are on fire in south Louisiana right now. I'll be living vicariously through you guys for the next several months. Try to save a few for me.

Oh, no, Craig!

Ooof, man that really sucks. Good luck with the surgery, pay close attention to the Dr and do your physical therapy, don't push it too hard.

Y'all be back at em in August, the fish will still be there.

I'm 73 too, yeah the stupid stuff I sometimes do leaves me shaking my head.

Prayers for a successful surgery and a fast full recovery brother.

Not great and I wish you a speedy and full recovery, but not many 73 year olds can say that they are strong enough to rip their own bicep from the bone! You'll forever be know as "river "bo jackson" rat" to me.....

And I hope there's been enough time for any LSU//Auburn or any other SEC rivalry//hatred thing that this northern doesn't quite understand for you to take Bo as a compliment.

Wow… six months

Good vibes for a fast recovery heading your way.

Can fishing be part of your PT?

Really sorry to hear this.

I certainly hope your corrective surgery and subsequent rehabilitation go as planned.

You could have moved that boat no problem.30 years ago. It’s easy to forget your age.

Oh man! I’m sorry to hear that hope you recover quick.

Man that just blows! Of course it couldn't happen in the fall, right? Sorry you have to go through this, but hoping for a fast, successful recovery.

That is a very tough break, Craig...hopes for a speedier recovery.

Sorry to hear this but it serves as a wake up call to us older fellows.

Prayers for a successful surgery and recovery.

Sorry to hear that. Hope surgery turns out for the best.

That sucks. Hope you have a successful outcome.

Hope you have a speedy recovery, I had my share of being not able to fish because of injuries and surgeries.

I sustained a partial tear in the bicep tendon 9 months ago when my kayak transport wheels got stuck in mud. I heard it tear like peeling steak off of a T-bone. Never want to hear that again! But mine was not nearly as severe as yours. That said surgery will help it knit back together faster/better. Mine is still quite tender after 9 months. All I could do was rest, then PT. Frustrating...

Good luck with the surgery - 6 months will seem long at first, then you'll get a second wind as you near your goal.

I feel for ya! Surgery will go well and you will be back to fishing before you know it!

Just to keep things in perspective, my friend Clayton has NO arms! Watching him tie on a jig with his toes is amazing.

Had to have my right bicep reattached a few years back. Fortunately half my waiting time was over the winter. I tried rolling a 15 lb bowling ball a little too vigorously. When I was allowed to lift up to five lbs , I went back to fishing because I dont catch bass that big anyway..

Thank you all for your support. My surgery is later today so I'm ready to get this started and on the road to recovery.

I keep telling myself it's not so bad about missing the spring bite. I actually do very well catching fish in late summer and through the fall.

Hope it all goes well!

Just 6 months to go through your gear and upgrade what you need/want!

As we get older, it is easy to forget that what we did "a few" years ago is not something we should do now. I was always a very active person and quite strong for my build. I got used to "just doing it". It took several injuries and some pain to learn to THINK before I act....as you found out. We are almost all guilty of doing something similar, though that is small comfort for you I am sure. Anyway, as others have said, listen to the doctor and do the PT as specified. And, you may find you have to rehab the other arm some at the same time, or you may end up with damaged arm being stronger than the undamaged one. And don't forget to work on your core strength at the same time. If you are doing everything with one arm you can easily lose strength in your back on one side which will make you more prone to back injuries when you get fully active again. I hope all goes well with your healing.
