Mounting a Battery Charger

Featured Replies

Do any of you have a suggestion for how to mount a new BPS 3 bank charger in the back compartment of a '95 Skeeter 150 ZX?  The directions say to allow 8" of clearance around the unit.  My first thought was to mount it under the passanger cowling, but the wires are not long enough to reach back into the battery storage area.  With the oil tank, gas tank and 3 batteries in there, the unit fits, but there is no way there is 8" of clearance.  Any input would be appreciated!!

i doubt i have the 8 inch clearance it states but i mounted mine on the underside of the back hatch door.  It has the fuels tanks and batteries under this hatch.  Since you wont be running the charger when you're using the boat i dont believe there should be a concern about fuel or batteries under use.

I do though open the hatch and let it breathe for 10-15 minutes before plugging it in.  and i always hook the charger up first and then plug the ext cord into ground fault outlet last.  reverse order when im ready to use boat.

Mine is floor mounted under the rear deck hatch. Letting the air get to it for a few minutes might be helpful but with inboards that have a blower you run the blower for several minutes before cranking. When my boat is out side and I don't want to chance water getting in I open the rear deck and prop the deck cover slightly ajar with a boat cushion so the heat from the charger can escape.

The 8" clearance is merely for airflow around the charger. You could get away with less but I wouldn't go jamming the thing into a tight fitting area.  If you can find a spot in back that gives the thing 4-6" around it you should be OK.
