How much motor for 16' jon boat

Featured Replies

Saw ad in local paper for 16' aluminum jon boat; trolling motor, near new 9 HP gas motor, trailer.  Without calling and getting my hopes up, is a 9HP engine enough for a 16' jon boat? I know it will say on boat if I go look, just trying to get some feedback first. Ad is asking $3k

If so, will it still be enough when I deck it and outfit it for two people to fish?

Thanks,

I got a 25hp on my 15ft fiberglass jon boat but I have seen 16ft aluminum jon boat that can hold up to 30hp motor. but I sure that the 9hp will probly get it up on plane.

I have a 1648 with a 9.9hp on it. It works fine for me. It gets me where I need to go,  just not too fast. I got a good deal on the motor so thats what I bought.

I fish mostly elelctric motor only lakes though. If I fished more gas lakes I would go with a little bigger motor.  Maybe 20 or 25hp.

A 9 hp is plenty to get you where you want to go.I have a 16 ft. glass boat and have a new Yamaha 25 hp outboard on it.It's sweet! It will haul arse!.

i had a 14 foot v-hull with a 9.9 and it pushed it around great.  I think the appealing thing with a motor below 10hp is it can be run by anyone of any age above 12 or so.  this could be a selling point when you ever get around to selling it.

With fuel and two adults, sometimes three it worked just fine.

the price seems a bit high, unless that motor is a real new model.

I sold my 14 with pedestal seats, 28lbs TM, 9.9hp and trailer for 1000.
